Personal Leadership
The Energy Leadership Index™ (ELI) assessment and debrief
Explore how perception, stress, and internal energetic patterns influence leadership, communication, decision-making, and day-to-day experience.
What is the Energy Leadership Index™ Assessment (ELI)?
The Energy Leadership Index® (ELI) is an attitudinal assessment developed by the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC).
Rather than measuring personality traits or fixed behavioural styles, the assessment explores how people perceive, interpret, and respond to situations — particularly under stress, pressure, and changing circumstances.
In this context, “energy” refers to the quality of perception and emotional response that influences behaviour, communication, leadership, decision-making, and resilience.
The assessment is widely used within executive coaching and leadership development contexts and has been recognised by Forbes as one of the top assessments leaders can use to increase self-awareness and leadership effectiveness.
What the Assessment Explores
Perception & Emotional Patterns
Understanding how interpretation, emotional responses, and internal narratives influence communication, leadership, relationships, and day-to-day experience.
Stress Responses & Behavioural Tendencies
Exploring how pressure, uncertainty, over-responsibility, perfectionism, conflict avoidance, or chronic stress influence reactions, decision-making, and behavioural flexibility.
Awareness, Resilience & Leadership Capacity
Developing greater self-awareness, emotional resilience, energetic flexibility, and the ability to respond to situations with more clarity, intentionality, and trust.
Understanding Energy and Perception Under Stress
The Energy Leadership Index™ (ELI) explores how individuals perceive and respond to situations across different levels of stress, engagement, and emotional awareness.
Rather than focusing only on external behaviour, the assessment identifies underlying energetic and perceptual patterns that influence communication, leadership, decision-making, relationships, and resilience.
The ELI framework differentiates between:
catabolic energy states, often associated with stress, conflict, resistance, or emotional contraction
and anabolic energy states, associated with greater openness, flexibility, collaboration, clarity, and sustainable engagement.
The goal is not to label energy states as “good” or “bad,” but to increase awareness of habitual patterns and expand behavioural and emotional flexibility over time.
The Energy Leadership Index™ assessment is administered exclusively by certified iPEC Energy Leadership Index Master Practitioners (ELI-MP).

The Debrief Process
The assessment itself is only one part of the process.
The real value often emerges during the debrief conversation, where the results are explored in context and translated into practical awareness, behavioural insight, and real-life application. The debrief creates space to identify recurring energetic patterns, stress responses, leadership tendencies, and areas where greater flexibility, resilience, and intentionality may become available.

When This Assessment Becomes Particularly Valuable
The Energy Leadership Index™ (ELI) provides a moment-in-time snapshot of how individuals currently perceive, interpret, and energetically respond to their environment, relationships, responsibilities, and day-to-day experiences.
Rather than measuring personality or fixed behavioural traits, the assessment helps make visible the underlying attitudinal and energetic patterns that influence leadership, communication, emotional responses, decision-making, stress perception, and behavioural tendencies.
Because of this, the assessment often becomes particularly valuable during periods of increased complexity, growth, pressure, transition, or self-reflection — especially for individuals seeking greater self-awareness, emotional intelligence, leadership effectiveness, and sustainable performance.
leaders navigating increased responsibility, organisational change, or greater complexity
professionals experiencing chronic stress, overthinking, emotional exhaustion, or sustained internal pressure
individuals noticing recurring behavioural or relational patterns under stress
high performers seeking more sustainable ways of leading, working, and decision-making
leaders wanting to strengthen emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and interpersonal effectiveness
individuals who recognise that leadership effectiveness is deeply connected to internal awareness and behavioural flexibility
professionals interested in understanding how energetic and attitudinal patterns influence communication, resilience, relationships, and performance
individuals seeking greater clarity, intentionality, and emotional resilience in both leadership and everyday life
